Diverse Perspectives: Working Together to Build Vibrant Communities

The Sacramento region is one of the most diverse in the nation. From the mountains and lakes to the valleys and rivers, our people and the environment they live in span a wide range. While we may diverge on specific beliefs, there is a call to work together to make our diverse communities more vibrant and livable.  This year, let's help bring diverse perspectives to the table so that we can learn from each other and work together on our common goals.  This year marks 10 years of the Speaker Series! APA and our partners are proud to celebrate a successful 10 years of this collaborative program and look forward to bringing attendees diverse perspectives in land use, development, public health, architecture, policy, and many others. 

All sessions, with the exception of September, will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

First session is Friday, June 23

bPLANNER'S PINT NIGHT WITH PROFESSOR ROBERT W. WASSERMAN - 

May 16

Join YPG at Oak Park Brewery on Tuesday, May 16th for an evening discussion with Professor Rob Wassmer and his graduate students at Sacramento State on population density and other research projects focused on the Sacramento region. Rob Wassmer is a professor in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Sacramento State, and is also the Director of Sac State's Master's program in Urban Land Development. Professor Wassmer and his students will also be discussing the pros and cons of graduate school for those interested in pursuing a higher degree of education in urban and regional planning.

cSUNDAY STREET ON BROADWAY WITH YPG - MAY 21



In partnership with the Greater Broadway District, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, and other organizations, the City of Sacramento's inaugural Sunday Street event will take place May 21, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Broadway from Riverside Boulevard to 26th Street, down to 2nd Avenue and east to Broadway. YPG will be helping the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA) with building and installing a separated bikeway demonstration project for Sunday Street, so be sure to come out and say hi!

CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR YOUNG PLANNERS AND STUDENTS - DUE JUNE 15f

Attention young planners and students!  Have you always wanted to attend the State APA Conference but haven't had the resources to do so? The Conference will be held in Sacramento this year and we would like aspiring planners to experience such a great learning opportunity right in our own backyard. SVS APA is pleased to offer scholarships to cover registration costs for the entire conference. Up to four scholarships each for students and young planners will be awarded (total of eight). Funds for these scholarships are provided by the Scot Mende Memorial Fund. Click here for scholarship requirements. REMINDER TO GET YOUR CM CREDITS BEFORE MAY 31ST

AICP members have a five-month grace period to continue earning and logging credits for the 2015-2016 reporting period. AICP members must complete 32 CM credits, including 1.5 CM credits toward ethics and law. If you have earned the required credits but not yet logged them, we encourage you to do so now.

National and State APA have numerous resources for completing your credits. Go to the National APA website and APA California website (under "CM Credit Opportunities") for more information.

The Sacramento Valley Section Board is seeking a Division Director for the Cascade Division. The Cascade Division includes the counties and cities within Shasta, Siskiyou, Lassen, and Modoc counties. The primary duties of the Cascade Division Director include: 1) providing input to the Section Board related to the special needs of members of the Cascade Division, and 2) organizing events for members of the Division. This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to get more involved with APA and have more opportunities to interact with fellow planners in the Sacramento Valley. APRIL HIGHLIGHTS

There was a great turnout on April 18th at the YPG student mixer in Davis! Current UC Davis students came to network with professional planners and hear about their experiences, projects, and potential job opportunities. Thank you to all who joined!

Over 75 policy-makers, planners, consultants, and others from the Sacramento region attended SACOG's Infill and Redevelopment Workshop on April 13th, held in partnership with the Urban Sustainability Accelerator (USA) at Portland State University.  New SACOG CEO James Corless kicked off the event and shared some of his vision for the future.  Robert Liberty, USA's Director, showed how the Sacramento Region Blueprint is being implemented, drawing on USA's work in the region.  Example projects in Citrus Heights, Cool, Davis, and Elk Grove were highlighted in a panel discussion.  The day ended with a "hands-on" mini-workshop led by urban strategist Michele Reeves (Civilis Consultants) that covered the basics of redevelopment from building program to pro forma.

HIGH SPEED RAIL SYMPOSIUM AND INSTITUTE IN BERKELEY FOR MAY 22-25, 2017

UC Berkeley's Tech Transfer Program will host a one-day symposium and four-day institute. The institute opens with the overview symposium on May 22nd, then continues for an additional three days of in-depth exploration of high speed rail technologies.  Drawing on knowledge and extensive experience from international experts and multi-national industry leaders, the curriculum covers tracks, vehicles, signals, operations, maintenance, safety and more. Not sure which vehicle miles traveled (VMT) estimation method to use for a project? An upcoming webinar featuring Susan Handy, Professor and Director of the National Center for Sustainable Transportation at UC Davis, and Amy Lee, graduate student at the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis, will discuss VMT estimation methods that are available and use case study projects to evaluate the results, applicability, data needs, and practical considerations of each method. This presentation will be followed by a discussion of the application of VMT quantification tools to current policy in California, led by Chris Ganson of the Governor's Office of Planning and Research.

CivicSpark's 2017-18 Fellow application is now open! CivicSpark, a Governor's Initiative AmeriCorps program, builds capacity for local governments to address climate change and water resource management. Each year, 70 CivicSpark Fellows support over 100 cities, schools, and other public agencies throughout California to implement local sustainability projects on topics including sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, climate action planning, adaptation, and water conservation and drought response.
